End of year report

On December 7, 2016, we voted out the incumbent president. I voted for the first time and it was a good feeling to partake in this democratic process and honor the sacrifices made by our forefathers to ensure that this was possible. Ghana is blessed to have had a peaceful election. In most African countries, election season is a time of great apprehension and tension. The Ghanaian incumbent gracefully accepted defeat and called the newly elected president to congratulate him. After January 7 2017 (presidential inauguration), we will have 3 living ex-presidents; a noble achievement for an African country.

It’s been 10 months since I returned home to Ghana after spending almost 12 years in the States. The last 9 months have been spent at the Methodist Faith Healing Hospital, located at Ankaase in the Ashanti region of Ghana, where I have been helping in the emergency room, revamping the ambulance service and helping with staff (nurses) development. It has been an interesting, fun filled and educational experience and I am thankful to God for this blessing and opportunity. I have tried to provide snapshots of my current journey via blogging and it is my hope that these blog posts have been both informative and educational.

With financial and prayer support from friends and family in the US, we were able to fund the first of two corrective surgeries for an infant with cleft lip/palate, provide care for another infant with staph infection and provide palliative care for a teenage girl with end stage renal disease. In addition, funds were made available to provide electronic blood pressure monitors, fix leaky roofs, and provide glucometers to enhance patient care at the hospital.

My experiences with patient care, healthcare challenges and extreme poverty within this community lead to the creation of Anidasowoha fund; a fund dedicated to covering medical expenses of those who are less fortunate and find themselves burdened by extreme poverty. Loyal support from our sponsors in the US enabled us to cover the expenses of a toddler who had multiple facial lacerations due to a fall and spent over a week at the ER. In addition, we covered medical costs for a 20-year old girl with advanced laryngeal carcinoma (terminal diagnosis) who needed palliative care. Currently, resources are being provided to help two and half year-old toddlers (twins) who have delayed development due to extreme malnutrition. Funds have been used to obtain drugs to treat severe anemia secondary to the malnutrition. Funds, from supporters in Northern Ireland, have also been provided to obtain nutritious meals for the twins.

PRAYER REQUESTS
We are currently supporting an 18-year old orphan (Gina) who is pregnant with triplets. She is due to deliver next month (January). Gina needs emotional and social support, especially after delivery.  In addition, the second corrective surgery for the infant (Emmanuel Yamoah) with cleft lip/palate shall be performed next month. We need prayers for a successful surgery.
The mom of Kwaku Asenso, the toddler with multiple lacerations who spent a week at the ER, is an alcoholic who wants to quit drinking. The psychiatrist has been working with her. She is facing challenges and needs lots of prayers. Her son was injured during one of her binges. Her name is Cynthia. Please remember these people in your prayers.
